What do Pact Ambassadors do?
Explain and inspire
- Make climate change easier to understand – what causes it, how it affects us and what we can do to tackle it.
- Encourage neighbours, communities, organisations and governments to take meaningful steps for the climate.
- Share your own climate actions and help spread the word about the Pact’s work and activities.
Get involved in your community
- Represent the Pact at local, national and EU-level events.
- Host in-person and online activities like Peer Parliaments, workshops and community meetups.
- Organise practical activities such as tree planting days, car-free initiatives or awareness-raising events.
Connect and collaborate
- Link up local climate advocates with networks, groups and decision-makers, and engage with policymakers.
- Swap ideas and experiences through peer-to-peer learning.
- Share climate solutions that others can build on in their own communities.

Pact Ambassadors act in their personal or professional capacity as representatives of a community or organisation, not on behalf of the European Commission. Being a Pact Ambassador does not involve organisational or financial support from the European Commission. Pact Ambassadors are selected based on their compliance with the Pact's objectives and values, and according to the progress of activities, such as ensuring proportionate representation across all Member States.
Why become a Pact Ambassador?
- Connect with a pan-European network: Be part of a growing and diverse community of over 1,000 Pact Ambassadors and dozens of partner organisations – from local and regional authorities to entrepreneurs, academics, youth leaders and more.
- Join high-level events and exchanges: Participate in local, regional and EU-wide events, such as the annual European Climate Pact event, Community Talks and Cafés, and European Climate Action Academy webinars.
- Learn and grow together: Learn from and share knowledge with your fellow Ambassadors, experts and advocates, sharing real experiences, best practices and local insights.
- Boost your climate skills: Access exclusive training, tools and capacity-building resources to strengthen your knowledge of climate policies, citizen engagement and advocacy.
- Take action: Turn knowledge into impact with support from tools, guides and opportunities to lead local or international initiatives supported by your Country Coordinator.
- Shine a light on your work: Increase visibility for your climate action through official EU channels, including the Pact’s website, social media and high-profile events.
- Earn recognition from the European Commission: Receive an official endorsement for your role in the green transition.
Who can apply?
A Climate Pact Ambassador is a person ready to inspire and motivate others to take climate action, to show the way as a changemaker in their own community, and to spark enthusiasm in others to create positive change themselves.
You are welcome to apply to become a Pact Ambassador if you are:
- a community leader or leader of an organisation, association, informal group or movement
- a mayor, parliamentarian, policymaker or other public office holder
- a representative of a cultural, educational or research institution
- an influencer or opinion leader
One of the European Commission's priorities is to ensure a just and inclusive transition. So, the Climate Pact also encourages applications from individuals with experience in social inclusion, poverty eradication and support for vulnerable groups.
We particularly encourage commitments and actions that reach individuals or groups with lower levels of climate awareness, and/or people who are currently less engaged in climate action.
Ambassadorships are awarded to individuals only. Your experience may include leadership within organisations or networks, but your application must reflect your personal commitment, actions and intentions. If you’re an organisation, you can apply to become a Partner of the Pact.
Applicants for the European Climate Pact ambassadorship must:
- hold a valid residence permit granted by any of the EU Member States
- apply in an individual capacity (not on behalf of an organisation or company)
- demonstrate a commitment to climate action
- have no known history of public allegations involving unlawful activity, environmental misconduct or greenwashing
What are the guidelines?
If selected as an Ambassador, you must:
- Complete the e-learning onboarding course within three weeks of acceptance.
- Make a concrete climate action commitment as a Pact Ambassador, presenting and identifying yourself as such, and reflect the role in what you say and do without claiming to work for the European Commission.
- Include at least three specific actions for the year, which could for example include:
- a citizen engagement activity
- interaction with a community-level group (e.g. school, community association, youth association, business network, peer network)
- a communication activity on a local, national or international communication channel, etc.
Country Coordinators can provide support and guidance.
- Participate in European Climate Pact activities, including:
- EU-level engagement: Take part in at least two events at the European level (online or in person) organised by the Climate Pact Secretariat during their mandate.
Examples include:- monthly Community Talks
- monthly Community Cafés
- the annual flagship event
- European Climate Action Academy webinars
- National-level engagement: Participate in at least two events or activities in your country, coordinated by your Country Coordinator.
Examples include:- national or local events
- community and capacity building activities
- citizen engagement activities
- PR-related activities
- EU-level engagement: Take part in at least two events at the European level (online or in person) organised by the Climate Pact Secretariat during their mandate.
- Annually report on these activities and participation to be eligible for renewal.
- Uphold the Climate Pact’s values and follow the Secretariat’s guidelines when carrying out your activities.
- Connect and stay in regular contact with your Country Coordinator (national activities) and the Climate Pact Secretariat (European-level activities).
- Engage actively with the Pact community at local and European levels.
- Respond to requests related to onboarding, reporting and renewal in a timely manner.
- Share Pact-related messages, achievements and campaigns through your own networks and online platforms, including the promotion of opportunities to join the Climate Pact community and calls for new Ambassadors and Partners.
- Contribute to visibility by collaborating with the Climate Pact’s communication channels.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Please read the following section carefully. Breaches may result in immediate termination of your ambassadorship.
Selected Ambassadors must NOT:
- Misrepresent affiliation: You cannot claim to work for or speak on behalf of the European Commission or the Climate Pact Secretariat. Ambassadorship does not constitute a professional affiliation with the European Commission.
For example: On LinkedIn or similar platforms, the Pact Ambassador role should be listed exclusively under ‘Volunteer Experience’ with the European Commission. - Imply that your views, activities or initiatives are officially endorsed by the European Commission or the Climate Pact Secretariat due to your Ambassador role.
For example: Media engagements should be framed clearly as personal perspectives, not as a representative of the Commission or Pact Secretariat without prior consent. - Expect financial compensation or reimbursement from the European Union or Pact Secretariat for your time or activities, including travel, unless you have been explicitly invited by the Secretariat to travel as a speaker, moderator or organiser as part of Pact activities, in your capacity as an Ambassador.
- Use your role as a Pact Ambassador to seek undue advantage, including for personal or commercial promotion or profit, or to seek to benefit from your role in contexts unrelated to advancing the Pact and its objectives.
- Use your title for greenwashing purposes, i.e. for deceptive or misleading practices to portray yourself or your organisation as more environmentally friendly or sustainable than it is. This involves making false or exaggerated claims about the environmental credentials of a product, service, company or organisation.
- Act, in the European Commission’s opinion, in any way that goes against the Climate Pact’s values.
Ambassadors who, in the view of the European Commission, fail to comply with the above requirements will have their ambassadorship terminated.
