The European Union is the world's climate pioneer. With the Green Deal and the goal of reducing emissions by at least 55% by 2030, the EU is well on its way to becoming climate neutral by 2050. But we can only master this great challenge with the support of each and every one!
What are Peer Parliaments?
The Peer Parliaments are the democratic heart of the EU Climate Pact. It is a peer-to-peer-initiative that brings friends, families, colleagues or neighbours together to discuss how to combat climate change and make Europe climate-neutral. Choose a topic of your interest – “how we move and get around”, “how we make energy green and fair”, or “how we consume and eat” – and discuss it with your peers in a familiar atmosphere!
What is the purpose of Peer Parliaments?
Peer Parliaments are innovative tools of citizen participation. They invite open-minded, responsible, and active citizens to learn and debate about climate change. Participants can express their wishes and contribute tailor-made solutions that will be discussed by EU policymakers and stakeholders in a series of roundtables. Plus, the results feed into the Conference on the Future of Europe – a one-year long process that gives citizens a say on the future trajectory of the EU.
Why should I become a Peer Parliament host?
We still can prevent the impending climate catastrophe, if we act together at all levels. In the family, in everyday life and in politics, everyone can do their part. With holding a Peer Parliament, you amplify your voice in a comfortable setting like your living room, a café or a park. Enjoy some quality time with your peers – and create impact at the same time!
As a host - what do I have to do?
As a host, you will take the lead to mobilize and activate a group of around 5-10 committed persons recruited from family, friends, colleagues, local associations, neighbourhood or your social media channels to rethink our European climate future. After registering, you will be supported by a toolkit that is adapted to the topics that you choose to discuss with your peers. Each topic focuses on two main questions and challenges for which you and your groups discuss possible solutions. After the discussions, you vote on the most preferred options and upload your group ranking.
What are these toolkits exactly?
The Peer Parliament toolkits support hosts to moderate the debate and help participants to learn about the topic and the different policy options. After registering, you will gain access to these toolkits – a manual (facilitation guide) and learning materials for the topic you choose and in your preferred language. Just download these materials and share them with the participants – either in print or digitally.
What happens with the results?
After having concluded the debate, you submit the results on this website. Then, your votes and opinions are collected and aggregated. With all the Peer Parliaments vote from across Europe, we will then draft a report that we present and discuss with policymakers and stakeholders.
