As the climate crisis intensifies, European cities face multiple and interconnected challenges, including floods, heatwaves, wildfires, and disruptions to critical infrastructure. The ability to anticipate, respond, and recover from climate risks has now become a central priority for sustainable local governance. Strengthening urban resilience and institutional preparedness is no longer a secondary objective of climate policy but an urgent necessity.
Within the framework of the “EU Regions Week – Close to You” initiative, INZEB, EU Climate Pact Country Coordinator for Greece, the European Committee of the Regions (CoR), and the Regional Union of Municipalities of Attica (PEDA) are joining forces to co-organise a high-level event in Athens entitled “Shaping Tomorrow, Together with the European Climate Pact – Urban Resilience and Preparedness”.
The event will take place on Wednesday, 22 October 2025, from 4:45 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. (CET), at the Amalia Hotel, 10 Vasilissis Amalias Avenue, Athens.
The purpose of this event is to initiate a high-level dialogue on how cities can develop effective systemic resilience strategies and prepare for climate-related crises.
The discussion will reinforce the broader goals of the European Green Deal by strengthening the link between local governance and systemic resilience, while also serving as a platform for showcasing practical resilience and preparedness strategies developed by cities across Greece and Europe.
Additionally, it will highlight the European Climate Pact as a participatory tool for building local capacity and raising climate awareness, thereby contributing to proposals for enhancing institutional cooperation and preparedness frameworks at the local and regional levels. Although climate mitigation remains a key priority, the discussions in Athens will focus on adaptation, emergency management systems, and comprehensive risk management at the local level, underscoring the complex nature of urban resilience and preparedness in the European context.
The event will bring together a wide range of institutional and local stakeholders active at the intersection of urban planning, resilience, and climate action, including ministries and competent authorities, municipalities from across Greece, civil society organisations, technical experts, research institutions, youth networks, and citizen platforms.
We warmly invite you to join us in Athens for an engaging discussion that aims to bring forward experiences, ideas, and proposals for building more resilient and better-prepared cities.
Registration is now open. You may register your interest in attending here.
