The seminar "Protecting the Sea for a Sustainable Future" is part of DG Mare's planning of activities for European Maritime Day in My Country and is organized by the Europe Direct centers in Trapani, Sicily, Chieti, and Molise.
The European Maritime Day events in my country aim to raise public awareness of the importance of oceans and seas and engage the public, especially young people. The goal is to make citizens understand that maritime activities (coastal tourism, fishing, sailing, maritime transport, offshore renewable energy, aquaculture, etc.) are crucial for EU citizens and economies.
The EU has 68,000 km of coastline, and approximately a third of the European population lives within 50 km of the coast.
The event aims to enhance the European maritime community, inviting them to network, discuss, and outline actions on maritime affairs. This is the reason that led Europe Direct Trapani, Sicily, Chieti, and Molise to take action to foster the construction of significant networks that can promote ocean literacy, ocean activism, and awareness of the sustainable blue economy, including through knowledge of EU-funded projects.
The event, which will involve local stakeholders from the area covered by the Europe Direct projects, will allow the active participation of educational institutions in the Sicily Region, recognized as Blue Schools for participating in the Shore and ProBlue programs, educational institutions of all levels in the province of Chieti, and Green Voices.
