We invite you to a lecture given by Prof. Katarzyna Jasikowska, in which you will be introduced to information on climate justice.
We will answer the questions:
- What do human rights have to do with climate change?
- What is neocolonialism and the exploitation of the so-called Global South?
- Who will suffer the most from climate change?
- How does age relate to feeling the effects of warming?
- How can we be agents in the era of climate crisis?
We deal with the subject of the climate and ecological crisis because "if not us, then who?" and because we consider it the greatest challenge facing humanity. In addition, it poses a threat to human rights, which are already not respected in many places around the world. As a result of this crisis, existing inequalities are deepening, and the rights of marginalized groups are being ignored. We all need to be sensitive to these problems, because only solidarity and empathy, followed by concrete actions, will allow us to adapt to life in new conditions. We believe that no one – no community – can be left in a “burning house”, therefore through our actions, also in the scientific field, we want to challenge the status quo built on colonial and neocolonial exploitation of the so-called global South. When we think about the climate and ecological crisis, we feel fear and doubt whether we will still be able to oppose the catastrophe (because we will not stop the crisis anyway). However, we still hope that we will be able to reformulate the goals we set for ourselves as societies, and that we will finally take care of each other.
Kasia Jasikowska - Professor at the Jagiellonian University, European Climate Pact Ambassador, works at the Institute of Sociology, is a member of the grassroots initiative klimatUJ and, established thanks to the efforts of klimatUJ, the Climate Council of the Jagiellonian University. She is interested in activities at the intersection of academia and activism that respond to the challenges of the climate and ecological crisis or, more broadly, the Anthropocene era.
