The connection between ecological justice and the quality of life in cities is a critical issue in the context of the Green Transition and Climate Change.
This is due to the large number of urban populations and the challenges facing cities as they are called upon to play a central role in action for Climate Change.
The issue is multidimensional and involves the interaction between the environment and social well-being.
The main parameters of this interaction include access to green spaces (ensuring equal access in all urban areas), reduction of pollution, climate resilience (involving urban regeneration projects, strengthening infrastructure resilience, and adaptation to climate change). Key issues also include social cohesion and trust, employment and education (through environmental justice programs), and infrastructure improvement.
The online event titled "Eco-Justice and Cities" aims to highlight these points and their critical connections based on modern research projects from Europe and worldwide. It seeks to address questions such as the compelling need for environmental justice in an urban context, the role of maintaining the balance between human and non-human interests, the connection between seemingly unrelated concepts within the climate crisis, how empowering citizens leads to climate action, and why citizen empowerment is a form of prevention.
This online event is the second discussion of the "Open Discussion - Let's discuss" cycle organized by the EU Climate Pact Ambassador Dr. Alexandra Politaki in collaboration with the International Institute for Climate Change, focusing on themes related to citizens’ engagement in Climate action in cities.
