Satellite event: The DANA in Valencia and Climate Change

Last autumn DANA in Valencia is a serious warning of Southern Europe's vulnerability to climate change. The event aims to increase public awareness of the link between climate change and the DANA and to support public response to climate disasters

Valencia has suffered the unprecedented impact of the floods resulting from the DANA of 29 October 2024.DANA stands for "depresión aislada en niveles altos": "isolated low pressure at high levels"in English. The Mediterranean region is highly vulnerable to climate change and the recent DANA in Valencia is a very serious warning for Southern Europe. The experience has been traumatic and reconstruction of the affected areas will take many years. The event aims to increase public awareness of the link between climate change and the DANA. Recent events in Valencia have shown the importance of strengthening adaptation efforts and of developing measures to prevent and manage climate disasters. In view of more frequent and violent extreme weather events, it is important to improve the response and support the resilience of the affected communities. The event will take place in Paiporta, which is one of the municipalities most affected by the DANA in Valencia, and will be led by EU Climate Pact Ambassadors. There will be a series of round tables involving the scientific community, civil society and EU Climate Pact Ambassadors. In the afternoon, a climate walk will be organised in Paiporta to see the extent of the damage and the reconstruction efforts.
