Satellite event: Climate Change, Biodiversity, and Sustainability: Lessons from Natural Archives and Proxies

Two days of lectures and practical activities open to students and the general public. It is a great opportunity to address the issue of biodiversity through a scientific approach, as a value in itself and as a guarantee of our well-being!

The upcoming seminar, scheduled for November 14-15, 2024, will span 16 hours and is set to bring together experts to share their knowledge, experience, and the latest research advancements in geobiodiversity and climate change studies.

The event will welcome PhD and undergraduate students from various Italian and international universities, fostering a rich exchange of ideas and learning. Key topics to be addressed during the seminar will include:

  • long-term changes in biodiversity;
  • iaridity and its effects on biodiversity;
  • the vulnerability of Mediterranean ecosystems and strategies for biodiversity conservation;
  • mathematical approaches to identify rapid and/or recurrent extreme events and their impacts on biodiversity.

In addition to lectures, the seminar will feature hands-on activities, including group projects, microscopic observation of palynomorphs, and participation in laboratory techniques such as sample preparation and charcoal analysis.

These practical sessions will take place in the Palynological Laboratory of the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Florence. This seminar promises to be a valuable opportunity to gain in-depth insights into biodiversity and climate variability, emphasizing their dynamics across both spatial and temporal scales.
