Satellite event: Art education talks: Climate Crisis / Dr. Susanne Henning: Art education as education for sustainable development

The climate crisis is a complex socio-ecological, economic and cultural challenge that permeates all areas of life, which is why we must also address its issues in art education.

What aspects of Education for Sustainable Development are inherent in contemporary artistic developments and in art education interested in these developments? Which art education priorities can be used to reinforce these aspects?

Dr Susanne Henning explores these questions by looking at different ways in which contemporary artists address sustainability issues explicitly, or approach ecological issues and working methods more implicitly. Focusing on the theme of water and drawing on theoretical considerations from the field of new materialism, she presents artistic approaches to natural phenomena that reveal an awareness of threats to the ecological foundations of life, develop sustainable ways of working with materials in artistic practice, or engage critically and transformatively with sustainability discourses through artistic means.

On the basis of concrete art-didactic considerations and examples, the project examines the extent to which artistic forms of perception, thought and action in art education can change our perception of our own role within complex ecological structures and thus contribute to the development of attitudes that are important for sustainable forms of thought and action.

The lecture and discussion will be held in German.

Participation via Zoom is possible here.
