The City of Gmunden warmly invites schools and school classes to a special screening of the award-winning documentary “REQUIEM IN WHITE – A Tribute to Our Glaciers” by Tyrolean filmmaker Harry Putz. What the film is about “REQUIEM IN WHITE” offers a cinematic exploration of environmental, climate-related and societal issues and is particularly well suited to complement current curriculum topics such as climate change, sustainability and Alpine ecosystems.
The documentary impressively captures the transformation of Alpine glacier landscapes and the consequences of climate change, including the ongoing retreat of glaciers in the Alps. Through powerful images from Austria, Germany, Italy and Switzerland, the film combines scientific knowledge with an engaging visual portrayal of the changes taking place in the Alpine region. It also provides insights into the scientific background of these changes and their impacts on natural environments and habitats in the Alpine region.
The film offers students a fact-based and scientifically grounded basis for engaging with climate change and its consequences. Harry Putz began experimenting with his parents' video camera as a teenager and soon combined his passion for filmmaking with professional snowboarding. Since 2001, he has worked as a freelance filmmaker, specialising in mountain and documentary films. Through his company FREILUFTDOKU, he produces nature and mountain films as well as films for business and tourism. Following his award-winning documentary Bis zum letzten Tropfen (2023), he has become particularly established in the field of documentary filmmaking. He is also a co-founder and curator of the internationally renowned Freeride Film Festival.
The screening provides an engaging starting point for classroom discussion and further learning and is particularly relevant to: Biology, geography, environmental education and related subjects; Current and regional perspectives on climate change; Raising awareness and encouraging critical thinking; Exploring key curriculum topics related to climate change, sustainability and Alpine ecosystems; Project work and follow-up lessons focusing on the environment, climate and the Alps.
