  • Public debates

Rakvere Food Day is a public food event taking place on 6 September 2026 in Rakvere.

The event combines a local food selling and sharing area with a programme of talks and discussions on food waste prevention and food rescue. The selling area will give home gardeners, hobby growers, home food makers and local small producers an opportunity to sell seasonal produce, homemade preserves, baked goods and other locally made food products.

The event is especially focused on autumn surplus, as this is a time when households often have more apples, vegetables, berries and other produce than they can use themselves. Homemade products made from surplus produce, such as cakes, pies and preserves, are also welcome. There will also be a free food sharing table where anyone can bring good and edible food that they no longer need. The aim is to give surplus food another use instead of letting it become waste.

The event programme will focus on practical aspects of food waste prevention and food rescue. Andres Jaadla, Climate Pact Ambassador, will speak about reducing food waste in households and valuing surplus food. Kristel Kibin from the Ministry of Climate and/or Elis Paesalu from the European Commission Representation will introduce the wider climate and food waste perspective.

Climate Pact Ambassador Ave Porkon will present the experience of the Tartu food rescue community and discuss how similar activities could be started in Rakvere. Liisa-Lotta Mumm will introduce the first food cabinet planned for Rakvere.

The event also aims to be a starting point for further food rescue activities in Rakvere, including cooperation between local residents, organisations and other relevant stakeholders. The main message of the event is simple: surplus food is not a problem, but a resource. The event encourages people to keep good food in use for longer by sharing it, selling it, giving it away or finding new ways to use it.
