Climate Governance and Energy Transition in Island Territories: Local Capacities and EU Policy Implementation

Addressing climate governance and energy transition in EU island regions, this event brings together policy and research to explore implementation challenges in outermost territories such as Madeira.

  • Reuniones de expertos

This policy-oriented expert meeting, organised under the European Climate Pact, will take place in Madeira and will focus on the implementation of climate policies in EU outermost regions.

The event aims to explore the specific challenges and opportunities faced by island territories in the context of climate governance, energy transition and sustainable territorial development. Bringing together researchers, policymakers, regional authorities and stakeholders, the meeting will foster dialogue on how European climate policies can be effectively implemented at the local and regional levels in insular contexts.

Main topics include:

  • climate governance and multi-level coordination in outermost regions
  • energy transition in isolated systems and island territories
  • green skills and institutional capacity
  • tourism pressure and territorial sustainability
  • climate adaptation and resilience in coastal and island regions.

The event will follow a structured expert meeting format, including an opening session, thematic panels and an interactive discussion, with the objective of generating policy-relevant insights and recommendations. It builds on previous successful Climate Pact initiatives and aims to strengthen the link between European policy frameworks and territorial implementation in EU outermost regions.
