Climate Action Days: Webinar: Ads that burn. Why cities are saying no to fossil fuel promotion?

Just as tobacco advertising was banned to protect lives, it is time to ban advertising for fossil fuels (advertising for air travel, cruises, polluting cars and the fossil fuel industry) to prevent the climate crisis from escalating.

  • Expert meetings

During this lunch webinar from 12.00-13.00, we will join three Climate Pact Ambassadors, Andrea Sbarbaro, Joost Brinkman & Rémi ter Haar, to take a closer look at the topic of advertising for fossil fuels. They will explain how successful they have been in their campaigns in local and national politics. From Amsterdam and Sydney to Stockholm: cities are banning advertising for fossil fuels. The webinar will provide you with scientific sources, practical tips, and suggestions so that you can start your own campaign to ban fossil fuel advertising in your city!

Last but certainly not least: Benedetta Scuderi, Italian MEP for the Greens, will reflect on the importance of banning this type of advertising in the EU and Italian context. Benedetta is known as a notoriously passionate and articulate motivator, so if you are in desperate need of inspiration for your climate action (aren’t we all these days???), we encourage you to join our lunchtime webinar!

Context speakers:

  • Andrea Sbarbaro is president of Cittadini Sostenibili and has been campaigning for a ban on fossil fuel advertising in Italy for the past few years. In February, the city of Florence voted in favour of a ban on fossil fuel advertising in outdoor spaces, and hopefully more Italian cities will follow suit soon.
  • Joost Brinkman is chair of the Glorious Glacier Ride and Fossil Free Cycling, cycling across the Alps to show the dire state they are in as a result of climate change. In every city, he advocated for an end to fossil fuel advertising, as it accelerates the disappearance of glaciers.
  • Rémi ter Haar is a legal campaigner and participated in the campaign for a ban on fossil fuel advertising in the Netherlands, where 17 cities have already voted in favour of such a ban. Most recently the city of Amsterdam voted to ban fossil fuel and meat advertising in outdoor spaces. She was also part of the successful legal case in The Hague about the ban on fossil fuel advertising.
