This conference, organized by the Italian community of the European Climate Pact, aims to examine the potential for Italian schools to play an active role in supporting the climate transition within their local communities. It will also explore whether, as seen in other European cities, schools can serve as “climate shelters,” helping to protect residents from the impacts of ongoing climate change.
Beyond the urgent need to mitigate climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the crisis also demands robust local adaptation strategies to prevent and manage the effects of increasingly frequent extreme weather events, particularly prolonged heatwaves. In this context, schools - especially those situated at the heart of their neighborhoods - have the potential to act as vital civic hubs and catalysts for urban regeneration.
