Agenda 2030: Enrico Giovannini and Arvea Marieni meet for a two-voice dialogue on the future of sustainable development

After COP31 and with 2030 approaching, what should replace the SDGs, and who will write the rules? A dialogue on the future of sustainable development, Europe’s role and Italy’s place in it. ASviS Report presentation.

Conferences and summits

On 25 November 2026, just days after the close of COP31, Enrico Giovannini and Arvea Marieni meet at the M9 museum in Mestre for a dialogue on the future of sustainable development beyond 2030. The occasion is the presentation of the report of ASviS, the Italian Alliance for Sustainable Development. With the 2030 Agenda nearing its deadline, the three Rio conventions on climate, biodiversity and desertification are converging towards a single agenda.

The decisive test now is turning that agenda into the rules, standards and spatial choices that change things on the ground. Enrico Giovannini is an economist, former minister and Scientific Director of ASviS. Arvea Marieni is Director of Ecological Transition at BEAM CUBE, Senior Adviser to the World Green Design Organisation and Visiting Scholar at Tsinghua University’s Institute for Climate Change and Sustainable Development.

Four questions frame the evening: what architecture should follow the SDGs, what role Europe will claim in building it, where Italy stands, and what two visions of development can learn from each other.
