European Climate Pact

Green skills

Climate action is already providing the jobs and opportunities of the future.

The transition to a climate-neutral economy will trigger a fundamental transformation across a wide range of sectors. New jobs will be created, while some jobs will be replaced and others redefined.

We need to:

  • promote and support green employment
  • address the skilling and reskilling of workers
  • anticipate changes in workplaces of the future

The Climate Pact will continue the EU’s work in this area and actively support labour organisations, educational bodies and public authorities to help those seeking employment in the green economy.

What will the Pact do?

  • Encourage businesses and organisations to get involved in the Pact for Skills to help up- and re-skill workers
  • Spread good practices and success stories gathered across European programmes
  • Help navigate the European Social Fund, which will enable training for five million people in green jobs and the green recovery
  • Link up with Erasmus+ and other programmes providing opportunities to develop forward-looking skills and partnership projects
  • Encourage stakeholders, local authorities and communities to make use of the Just Transition Mechanism to promote re-skilling and active inclusion of workers and jobseekers, and help create new local jobs in the targeted regions
  • Signpost to support programmes for higher education institutions seeking to develop and teach courses on environmental and climate impacts
