The University of Maribor Faculty of Tourism is among the early signatories of the Glasgow Declaration on Climate Action in Tourism, supporting urgent action to accelerate climate mitigation in the sector and contribute to the global goals of halving emissions over the next decade and reaching net zero before 2050.
The Faculty supports tourism policymaking, organises events, and develops content for knowledge dissemination within the tourism industry and destination management organisations. It also organises participatory workshops and works closely with the Slovenian Tourism Board to engage tourism stakeholders across Slovenia.
Key outputs include climate action guidelines for the Slovenian tourism industry and policymakers, and the development of a national model to calculate the carbon footprint of tourism. This model is now integrated into Slovenia’s tourism data dashboard and automatically calculates the carbon footprint based on tourism arrivals and nights spent in the country for each Slovenian municipality.
