Sciaena is a non-profit organisation with national and international reach, founded in 2006. It works towards a healthy marine environment and an informed society actively engaged in its conservation. Its mission is to improve the state of marine ecosystems by promoting sustainable fisheries and other responsible uses of marine resources, and by reducing the impacts of pollution through knowledge, education, communication and policy engagement.

Sciaena takes an interdisciplinary approach, aiming to bridge scientific knowledge and society while valuing the perspectives and involvement of all stakeholders. Through this collaboration, it develops integrated strategies and practical actions to support the long-term protection and sustainable management of marine ecosystems, The organisation serves as an open platform for communication, information sharing, training, education and knowledge exchange.

Given its focus on the marine environment, Sciaena works closely with a wide range of actors, including  scientific researchers,  coastal resource users such as professional and recreational fishermen, local and regional authorities, development organisations, tourism operators, cultural institutions, private entities and interested citizens.
