General Information

The Bloemekenswijbos is a historically valuable swamp forest in Belgium with many mature trees that would be cut down, while recent legislation at both EU and Flemish level emphasises the need for more forests and infiltration areas. The site has a history of heavy historical contamination, including the use of asbestos. With the neighbourhood committee and the non-profit organisation Postversa, we believe that the pollutants there can be remediated naturally by planting additional specific tree species, such as poplars and willows.

More information on the pledge

Actions directed towards fulfilling the pledge include:

• Collaborate with local residents and the site owner to develop a comprehensive plan of action by April 1, 2023.
• Host a big family picnic with local products (Short chain) by June 1, 2023, to raise awareness and educate the community about the importance of forests in combating climate change.
• Secure a written commitment from the Ghent city council to protect the site and explore alternative options for the staging area by November 1, 2023.
• Set up local actions to promote the use of public transportation and reduce food waste and other sources of greenhouse gas emissions.
• Make minutes from meetings publicly available and share on social media platforms to promote transparency and open communication.
• Encourage the use of energy-efficient appliances and promote a health-based diet with local food producers.
• In meantime we will promote the use of reusable bags, water bottles, and containers.
• Implement a community-wide composting program.
• Encourage the use of the EU Ecolabel and promote it with clients, customers, and suppliers around the Bloemekenshofwijk.
• Achieve official zoning designation as a protected nature and recreation area by January 1, 2025.
