Carbon Emissions (or CO2e)
Advocating and promoting climate actions in the military sector; reduction of CO2 emissions in the military could significantly contribute to fighting climate change. Through cooperation with partners we are interested in adding the connection of climate and defence into the policymakers' agenda.
By making changes on how the militaries are operating, their environmental footprint could be reduced; the defence sector should become included into the Commissions objectives for 2030. EUROMIL - along with partners - plans to support and promote actions that will lead towards the “greening” of the military. To provide few examples, the replacement of fuel tanks with electric ones, the recycling of military uniforms and a broader use of renewable energy sources could significantly cut the emissions coming from the military. EU Member States should further collaborate together to that matter and collect and share more data with each other, and thus cut Greenhouse Gas emissions, improve the efficacy of the militaries in missions and operations and better protect the soldiers’ health.
EUROMIL is planning to achieve the goal of including the climate-military topic into the policymakers’ agenda through the following actions:
- Organizing info days on the topic with experts to better inform citizens and raise awareness
- Social Media Campaigns
- Raising the issue on the Conference on the Future of Europe multilingual platform.
Besides, EUROMIL has already been active in social media concerning climate change and the military as well as in the multilingual platform (https://futureu.europa.eu/processes/GreenDeal/f/1/proposals/140614).
The main reason that EUROMIL decided to make this pledge is that climate change represents the most important threat in our world; governments and organizations should work together to fight climate change. The military and the defence sector should be included - and not neglected - in the climate change discussions in order for the current measures to produce tangible results.
