In 2022 we plan to organize at least one youth climate change education and engagement program in eastern Slovakia and one in the Czech republic. We will create at least two publications to support Slovak teachers in understanding the fundamentals of climate change education. We will continue to advocate for strengthening climate change education within the Slovak primary school curriculum reform.
We will pilot our youth climate change education program in Medzibodrožie, one of the least developed regions of Slovakia, which is also one of the most vulnerable to the effects of climate change. The second will be designed for youth in the Jihlava region, Czech republic. The program will run for 2 months and will be designed according to the principles of project- and place-based education. Educators will receive the programs methodology and all accompanying resources to try out in the future. They will also receive a publication that explains what the goals of climate change education are and how they related to their local contexts.
Youth in Slovakia and Czechia are concerned about climate change, however most recognize they could do a lot more in practice. One of the biggest barriers they perceive is the lack of opportunities to engage in their local communities. Through our educational programs we want to help youth view their home through the lens of climate change and help them uncover the many possibilities they could do.
