Leader Bergslagen LAG carries out and finances rural development projects. All its projects follow the horizontal principles of the European Union and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The LAG places particular emphasis on protecting biodiversity and forests, promoting equal opportunities and supporting a good quality of life that is adapted to climate change in rural areas.

Leader Bergslagen LAG covers ten municipalities across three regions: Smedjebacken and Ludvika in southern Dalarna; Skinnskatteberg, Fagersta, Norberg and Surahammar in northern Västmanland; and Hällefors, Ljusnarsberg, Nora and Lindesberg in northern Örebro County.

The organisation operates according to the LEADER approach, with representation from the public, private and non-profit sectors. This approach is based on a bottom-up perspective, innovation, integrated initiatives, networking, cooperation, local action groups and locally developed strategies.

LEADER is a European programme designed to involve local communities in rural economic development by supporting them to design and implement strategies tailored to their regions.
