Description
On 14 July, the European Commission presented a comprehensive package of 13 legislative proposals. These proposals seek to meet the targets enshrined in the Climate Law, which mandates a reduction of emissions (from 1990 levels) of at least 55% by 2030 – and climate neutrality by 2050. This landmark package, known as “Fit for 55”, encompasses changes to the energy system, low-carbon innovation and the transformation of the manufacturing industry, measures to promote more sustainable transport and the phasing out of the conventional car, as well as policies to improve the energy efficiency of buildings. The package represents not only a comprehensive overhaul of the many policies that have been put in place over the last two decades, but includes two significant new elements: the creation of a climate social fund and the establishment of a carbon border adjustment mechanism. With these measures the European Commission proposes to make the Green Deal a reality.
