The European Association for Local Democracy (ALDA) is a membership-based organisation dedicated to promoting good governance, citizen participation and local democracy in the European Union, its Neighbourhood and beyond. Established in 1999 at the initiative of the Council of Europe, ALDA has over 25 years of experience in participatory democracy and cooperation between local authorities and civil society.
ALDA coordinates and supports a network of more than 300 members – including local authorities, civil society organisations and associations of local authorities – from over 45 countries, strengthening collaboration between institutions and communities to support democratic governance and sustainable local development.
Within this framework, environment and sustainability are central strategic priorities. Through its Environment & Climate Hub, ALDA connects citizens, institutions and local authorities to co-design solutions for the green transition. The Hub focuses on four priorities: climate change adaptation and mitigation, green skills and environmental education, circular economy and inclusive transition, addressing cross-cutting issues such as energy, gender and climate, sustainable food systems and water.
ALDA plays a key role in linking democratic engagement with climate action, fully aligning with the objectives of the European Climate Pact.
