Smart Cities and Climate Governance in South America: Accelerating Climate Action through Urban Innovation

This expert meeting, organised as a European Climate Pact Climate Action Days 2026 satellite event in partnership with SD'26, will bring together researchers, policymakers, practitioners, and urban innovation experts from South America and Europe to discuss how smart city approaches can accelerate climate action and sustainable urban development.

The event will explore the role of digital transformation, data-driven governance, climate resilience, sustainable mobility, energy efficiency, and citizen engagement in supporting the transition towards climate-neutral and climate-resilient cities. Special attention will be given to South American experiences and challenges, highlighting innovative practices, governance models, and collaborative initiatives that contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

The meeting aims to strengthen dialogue between European and South American institutions, foster knowledge exchange, identify opportunities for international cooperation, and promote practical solutions for addressing urban climate challenges in rapidly growing metropolitan and intermediate cities. The event will include keynote presentations, expert discussions, and an interactive roundtable focused on policy recommendations and future cooperation pathways for smart and climate-resilient urban development.
