We are living in a time of Climate Emergency. It is therefore essential to rethink the role of school as a space–time for reflection and action in response to this urgent challenge - one that calls us to create conditions for sustainability.
More than simply learning and reproducing definitions and explanations of climate-related phenomena, our goal is for students to deepen their understanding of the interrelationships and interdependencies that define a closed system (such as our planet).
Above all, we want them to design and act "glocally" towards regenerative systems, guided by the principles of Sustained and Sustainable Human Development.
Goals:
- To explore, discuss, and value the contributions of Science in observing, explaining, monitoring, and addressing the problems caused by the impacts of climate change in a complex world;
- To explore, discuss, and value the contributions of Languages, Humanities, and the Arts in observing, questioning, reflecting, and acting on climate change in a complex world;
- To deepen knowledge of the contemporary world (the “Anthropocene”), recognizing forms of action that support Sustainable Development from a glocal perspective;
- To reflect on and discuss the development of climate activism initiatives, considering different forms and levels of engagement, through participatory projects and actions relevant to the educational community, using a project-based learning methodology;
- To develop knowledge and practices for communicating and assessing actions and projects.
Topics:
- Climate Science: How is scientific knowledge constructed? (The Nature of Science);
- Climate and Climate Emergency: data/evidence, key studies/findings, and published authors; the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change / UN);
- Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship: Transnational Agencies and Organizations; the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals / UN);
- The Portuguese and local context (school community – glocal approach);
- Activism as an expression and practice of participatory and transformative citizenship through school-based projects
