Rome River Fieldwork

From 20–22 October, Roma Tre students and European tutors will explore Rome’s Tiber River through field visits and dialogue with local stakeholders, mapping cultural ecosystem services.

Training and workshops

The Roma River Fieldwork will take place in the Ostiense–Marconi area of Rome, along the Tiber River, as part of Erasmus+ PLaCES – Improving Landscape Planning and Design with Cultural Ecosystem Services in HEIs. It will bring together students from the Master’s Programme in Urban Design at Roma Tre University’s Department of Architecture, tutors from the project’s partner universities, and local stakeholders.

Over the three days, field visits along the Tiber and exchanges with local stakeholders will offer opportunities for observation, dialogue and experiential learning. Students will explore how people use and experience the riverfront and map its cultural ecosystem services. Drawing on their fieldwork and discussions, they will develop urban strategies to strengthen the relationship between the river and the city, improve access to public spaces, and support climate adaptation.

The Ostiense - Marconi area brings together industrial heritage, public and recreational spaces, different forms of river access and social practices. It offers a setting for examining how the cultural and ecological value of an urban river can contribute to a more inclusive and climate-resilient city.

PLaCES is coordinated by the University of Gothenburg, with Roma Tre University, ENGEES and Hochschule Geisenheim University as project partners, and TU Dortmund University as an associated partner. Dr. Romina D’Ascanio, a European Climate Pact Ambassador, co-coordinates the Roma Tre University unit with Prof. Anna Laura Palazzo.
