Kecskemét Rain Gardens - A Climate Walk with Farkas-Barta Kata

Concerned about dry summers and the future? Join Kecskemét’s Climate Walk to explore rain gardens and the ErdőPark, and discover how nature-based solutions can retain rainwater, boost biodiversity and make urban green spaces more resilient.

  • Info days

This in-person awareness-raising climate walk will focus on the role of rain gardens as nature-based solutions for climate adaptation and sustainable urban water management.

In 2024, the City of Kecskemét was awarded the prestigious Climate Star prize in recognition of its commitment to innovative climate action. In collaboration with the local Zöld Küldetés Association and European Climate Pact Ambassador Kata Farkas-Barta, the municipality has established a network of rain gardens across several locations in the city.

These rain gardens are designed to capture, retain, and facilitate the infiltration of rainwater into the soil during periods of intense rainfall, thereby helping to mitigate the impacts of extreme weather events. Beyond their water management function, they serve as attractive green spaces featuring a diverse range of perennial plants, shrubs, and, in some locations, trees. As such, they contribute significantly to urban biodiversity, climate resilience, and the provision of valuable ecosystem services.

The walk will provide participants with an opportunity to explore these initiatives firsthand, learn about their environmental and social benefits, and gain a deeper understanding of how nature-based solutions can support more resilient and sustainable communities.
