“If Rivers Could Speak: From Voice to Action” is an interactive, interdisciplinary Earth Day workshop designed for secondary school students and the wider community.
The workshop combines AI-supported learning, systems thinking, environmental education, and active citizenship, transforming participants from passive learners into engaged “River Guardians.”The event is structured as a station-based experiential learning journey, where participants rotate in small groups through five thematic stations. Each station represents a different stage of understanding—from emotional connection and inquiry to analysis, systems thinking, and action—ensuring a holistic and impactful learning experience .
Activity Description:
1. Croatian Rivers Speak (AI Chatbot Lab) Participants interact with AI-powered chatbots representing Croatian rivers. Through guided questions, students “interview” the rivers, exploring environmental challenges from a first-person perspective. Outcome: A “River Voice Statement” expressing the river’s condition and needs.
2. European Rivers Interactive Map (Genially) Using an interactive digital map created in Genially, participants explore major European rivers. They analyse climate risks, human impacts, and successful restoration strategies. Outcome: An “Insight Card” including a problem, a key fact, and a transferable solution.
3. Fresk – River System Thinking Participants engage in a collaborative systems-thinking activity by organising concept cards (e.g., pollution, drought, biodiversity loss) into logical chains: cause → impact → consequence → solution They then identify key intervention points where change is most effective. Outcome: A visual “Fresk Map” demonstrating understanding of complex environmental systems.
4. Climate Quiz Challenge Through a gamified quiz (e.g., Quizizz or QR-based forms), students reinforce their knowledge in a competitive and engaging format. Outcome: Immediate feedback, peer discussion, and consolidation of key concepts.
5. Reflection Zone – From Pledge to Action Participants reflect on their learning and commit to personal, local, or global environmental actions. Outcome: A collaborative “Water Pledge Wall” showcasing commitments to protect water resources.
Final Reflection and Impact The workshop concludes with a guided reflection, where participants share insights and revisit the central question: What happens if we do not act—and what role do we play in shaping the future of rivers?
By combining technology, creativity, and environmental awareness, this workshop creates a powerful learning experience that not only informs but also empowers participants to take meaningful action in protecting one of Earth’s most vital resources—water.
