This activity will take place in Cieza (Spain) as part of the Green Innovation Camp dedicated to biodiversity, organised within the LIFE GreenMe5 project and aligned with the European Climate Pact Climate Action Days.

The event brings together representatives from several European municipalities participating in LIFE GreenMe5, including Murcia, Cieza, Arezzo, Vilnius and Helsingborg. The programme includes technical exchanges, expert presentations and field visits focused on urban biodiversity, green infrastructure and nature-based solutions.

A key hands-on activity will be the creation of a butterfly garden, where participants will plant trees and pollinator-friendly vegetation in a lawn area to support local biodiversity. With this practice, we eliminate part of the lawn with high water requirements by replacing it with species that have low water requirements, promoting biodiversity, improving the landscape image, and providing refuge and food for pollinators.

This initiative aims to create a small ecological habitat that provides food and shelter for butterflies and other pollinators while improving urban green spaces. The activity highlights the role of urban nature-based solutions in addressing climate change, improving ecosystem services and strengthening ecological connectivity within cities.

Format of the event:

  • Expert talks and presentations on biodiversity and urban greening
  • Exchange of experiences between European cities participating in LIFE GreenMe5
  • Hands-on tree planting and creation of a butterfly garden
  • Field visits to local biodiversity and renaturalisation initiatives in Cieza Objectives
  • Promote biodiversity and pollinator habitats through urban greening
  • Demonstrate practical climate action through nature-based solutions
  • Share knowledge and experiences between European municipalities
  • Raise awareness about the importance of biodiversity in climate-resilient cities.
